| Rishikesh - Yoga Capital of the World Rishikesh has numerous ashrams where you can study yoga and meditation. There is a lecture series every morning on Hindu philosophy in the Ashram. There are several sightseeing opportunies around the area including waterfalls and temples. Many tourists use Rishikesh as a starting place for visits and treks deeper into the Himalayas. Rishikesh is on the banks of the Ganges and the water is clean here for swimming. There is a sandy beach with a lagoon where you can advoid the strong currents. In the evening the Parmath Ashram has a ritual puja on the Ganges with live music and ceremonies. Swarg Ashram, the area where most of the tourists go in Rishikesh, is located accross the footbridge at Ram Jula. It is quite peaceful in this area compared to some other parts of India as there is little traffic and no autorickshaws.
Costs - Rishikesh is a great place for the budget traveler. Decent hotels can be found for $6 USD a night for a double - and there are many much cheaper. A good place to stay is the Hotel Shiva, and there are many ashrams and hotels with innexpensive accomodation. Meals are $ 1 USD and under. Taxis can be hired for day trips for $10 to $20 USD. Getting There - There is an express train from Delhi to Haridwar - from there you can take a taxi to Rishikesh (ask for Ram Jula). There is a direct overnight train from Rishikesh to Pathankot if you are thinking about visiting the Dalai Lama. If you have never been to India before you can fly into Delhi and have your hotel pick you up at the airport.
